Buble's "Caught in the Act"
Big Voice, Big Hit
By Penny Remick, 02.15.06
Michael Buble, inspired by his grandfather’s tastes in big band crooners like Frank Sinatra, found a happy place in the universe. Though he certainly does not present himself as a morose, smoking, drinking bar fly type, his publicist and stylist must have had something to say about presentation. Buble’s clean cut persona is merely shattered by a bulky tie, purposely set askew. Otherwise, he could be wearing someone’s black funeral suit.
Buble’s career blossomed when David Foster, Grammy award winning producer and Warner Brothers record executive, signed him on for the production of his first album, "Michael Buble," which was released in 2003 on his home turf, Canada. Subsequently, he gained success and exposure in the United Kingdom, U.S. and Australia.
Buble has since seen a wellspring of album releases, appeared in four feature films, variety shows, and commercials.
Buble’s hit single,"Home" is featured in his next to last release, "It’s Time." This CD sold four million copies worldwide, and it was Grammy nominated for Best Traditional Pop Album.
Most recently, "Caught in the Act", a combination live concert CD and DVD is on shelves and ready for Buble fans to take home to enjoy over two hours of entertainment in music, conversation, and “back stage pass” behind the scenes prep encounters.
"Caught in the Act" lends a sexy, big band sound to Buble’s legendary voice, as well a softer, decelerated version of "Home", his piece de resistance. In this version, Buble affects the song more personally, drawing on the words with more emotion.
Other shining examples in this CD include Charlie Chaplin’s, "Smile," which features a triumphant and peppy trumpet. Buble underscores this particular number as his “message of hope” to the world.
The DVD portion of "Caught in the Act", directed by David Horn creates an intimate, entertaining salutation to many great works, such as, "You Don’t Know Me" (Eddy Arnold), and the ever beautiful melody, "Song For You" (Leon Russell).
Other features of the DVD include a surprise and comic interruption by Joshua Groban (Foster worked with Groban, also), as well as Chris Botti on trumpet closing the live P.B.S. show with Buble.
Most pleasant to witness is not only Buble’s natural talent for singing like butter, but his sincere gratitude toward his fans, his musicians, producers and directors. Here is a young man who has caught the moon and stars in his hand while duly paying homage to the earth’s best. The CD and DVD combination brings enhanced listening and entertainment to the buyer, though it is reflected in the overall cost. This set is best purchased by true Buble fans, or an excellent gift choice for a fan.
