New Spin on a Classic Love Triangle
The modern interpretation of "The Great Gatsby"
leaves you wanting more.

When you combine Hip-hop and the Hamptons – you get big parties and a lot of bling-bling.
In the film “G,” that is about all you’ll get.
Created as a modern adaptation of the classic novel “The Great Gatsby,” “G” attempts to show the power in one’s anger, but the base story-line doesn’t allow this theme to flourish as much as it could.
Magazine writer Tre (Andre Royo) is sent to the Hamptons for an interview with Mr. Summer known as G, owner of a record label. While there he visits his cousin Sky (Chenoa Maxwell) and her husband Chip (Blair Underwood). The plot grows heavy when we discover that Sky and G have a relationship from that past, something Sky has kept secret from Chip.
The film successfully blurs the lines of social categorizing with its almost entire African American cast. This interpretation of Gatsby is unique, however the plot is reminiscent of a soap opera.
Blair Underwood plays the most convincing role as Sky’s scheming and manipulative husband. Sky suspects Chip is cheating, right when G comes back into her life. A reunion is arranged between Sky and G, where Sky tells him why she left.
The last scenes show the peak of action. Each character’s story is brought together in a surprising crescendo. However, it is difficult to fully buy into to the emotions of the actors as music was used to indicate the drama, not their performances.
The film had entertaining and humorus scenes, along with beautiful photography. Yet, you may leave with the sense that it was not all it could have been.
"G" is an independent Feature Film, 98 min. opens Sept. 16, 2005 – limited release.
