"Related:" Only Distant Cousins
to "Friends"

“The creative forces of ‘Friends’ and ‘Sex and the City’” have teamed up to produce a poor attempt at a hit show.

“Related,” which premiered Wednesday, Oct. 5, follows four sisters as they struggle through their twenties. By struggle I mean that they face ordinary life situations while they live in their hip New York apartments, wear trendy clothes and look pretty.

In their first episode oldest sister Ginnie (Jennifer Esposito), and husband Bob (Callum Blue), faced a surprise pregnancy. Ann (Kiele Sanchez), underwent an all too easy breakup of a six-year relationship. Marjee (Lizzy Caplan), faced a work crisis which involved pug dogs. And little sister Rose (Laura Breckenridge), switched majors at school from pre-med to experimental theater to prove that she can “try something new.”

Of course, all of these things were kept secret until the end of the hour when all four cats came out of the bag at their father’s surprise engagement party. The sisters then followed Ann to the bathroom where she locked herself in a stall. Her faithful sisters climbed the toilets and peered over the metal walls to convince her that they care. In the end, the sisters rediscover that they love and will always be there for each other. After all, they’re related.

Although the show had its hopeful moments, it was predictable and too light to take seriously. Sorelli sister Ann was the only character who showed some depth but was overshadowed by her three flighty siblings.

Unless the fam puts more effort into their performances and the writers into their plot, the future of “Related” looks unexciting.

It was not the must see weekly show that I was hoping to get hooked on.

“Related” airs on the WB on Wednesdays at 9 p.m.
