Actor Taye Diggs brings “Kevin Hill” to life in UPN’s latest drama about a bachelor who suddenly becomes a father to an infant.
Diggs plays hotshot lawyer and lady-killer Kevin Hill, a man whose life suddenly takes a 180-degree turn.
Hill becomes the legal guardian of a 10-month-old baby girl named Sarah, the daughter of his deceased cousin John.
Instead of juggling women, Hill must cope with dirty diapers, early morning feedings and crying.
Diggs presence on the small screen is welcoming and should showcase his charismatic appeal well. Although the actor is no stranger to television, he is more well-known for his movie roles in “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” “The Best Man,” “The Wood” and “Brown Sugar.”
As evident in his work, Diggs has a knack for playing men who need to do a little growing up. Usually it’s a female who helps the process along-in Hill’s case it is baby Sarah.
During the first episode, Kevin Hill’s private life undergoes major changes. The demands of fatherhood cause Hill to quit his job at a major law firm and accept a position at a smaller firm staffed by women.
The boss of the firm is “Jessie Grey,” a single mom played by Michele Michael. The other lawyers are played by Christina Hendricks, and Kate Levering.
The show is not a straight, serious drama. Comedic relief is abundant. Hill hires a homosexual nanny, Patrick Breen, who teaches Kevin about fatherly responsibility.
Baby Sarah also throws a curb ball on Hill’s bachelor life. Kevin can not just take off anymore for an evening and hit the party scene with his best buddy “Dame Ruiz,” played by Jon Seda.
These challenges and changes in Hill’s lifestyle should keep the show interesting for the audience. “Kevin Hill” creator Jorge Reyes has a likely hit.
